Total population for the Philadelphia Metropolitan region grew from 4.9 million in 1990 to 5.1 million in 2000, a 4% increase. The darker the green, the higher the population growth in the tract between 1990 and 2000. Darker brown indicates tracts with the biggest decline in population. Overall, this map shows a population decline in Philadelphia and in some rural areas far away from center city. The population increases in a ring around Philadelphia.
